digital/physical dance transmissions

This work was an exploration on how movement aesthetics and nuances can shift when processed through sensor based motion capture technology and dancing bodies, it asks how can co-choreograph with software and use glitch moments to feed choreographic interest. A dancer was taught a phrase of choreography and that was captured with a Vicon MoCap system and the data was processed and refined in Motion Builder. Then in Motion Builder dancers movement were altered, or “re-choreographed” and then a new phase was born in digital space and rendered out for a new set of performers to learn. Three different dancers then learned this “new” choreography off the animated avatar and then reinterpreted it based solely on that phrasing- closing the physical digital loop.
